Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is an intensely painful condition in the face. Trigeminal neuralgia affects the trigeminal or fifth cranial nerve, one of the largest nerves in the head and face. The extreme pain can occur suddenly and last a few seconds or even a few minutes. The disorder causes burning or shocklike pain that can occur sporadically and in quick succession. Anatomy

The fifth cranial nerve is one of 12 pairs of cranial nerves starting at the base of the brain. The nerve is composed of three branches that provide sensations from the upper, middle, and lower part of the face and mouth to the brain. The upper branch serves the scalp, forehead, and front portion of the head. The middle branch serves the cheek, upper jaw, upper lip, teeth, gums and nose. The lower branch reaches the lower jaw, teeth, gums and lip. One or more of these branches can be affected by this disorder.

Causes of Trigeminal Neuralgia

Trigeminal neuralgia is believed to be caused by a pulsating blood vessel pressing on the fifth cranial nerve at the brain stem. The outer covering of the nerve (the myelin sheath) may be compressed by the pulsation and gradually waste away during the aging process. Another factor that can contribute to deterioration of the myelin sheath is multiple sclerosis. Abnormal signals could be sent to the brain if the myelin on the nerve has deteriorated. The disease rarely affects anyone younger than 50.
