Anatomy

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a hinged joint which connects the mandible (lower jaw) to the temporal bone of the skull. This joint is located immediately in front of the ear on each side of the head. The joint is flexible and allows the jaw to move easily up and down as well as side to side. This is what allows you to talk, chew, laugh and to yawn. Movement of this joint is controlled by muscles which are attached to and surrouning the joint. These muscles and other facial muscles control movement of this joint, allowing opening and closing the mouth.

Causes of TMJ Syndrome

Symptoms are attributed to problems with the jaw joint or facial muscles. TMJ can be the result of an injury, clenching the teeth, or dislocation of the ball and socket joint of the jaw. TMJ can also be caused by osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis and by stress.
