Anatomy

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the human body and is as thick as a man’s thumb at its largest point. The sciatic nerve originates in the lower spine, where the nerve roots exit the spinal cord and extend all the way down the back of the legs into the toes. The nerve is made up of a total of five nerve roots that converge to form the sciatic nerve. It is formed on the right and left side of the spine by a combination of the fourth and fifth lumbar nerves and the first three nerves of the sacral spine. Each nerve exits the spine between two vertebral segments and is named for the segment above it.

Causes of Sciatica

Sciatica is a form of peripheral neuropathy (dysfunction of a nerve). This dysfunction occurs when there is injury to or pressure on the sciatic nerve. The irritated nerve roots in the lumbar or lumbosacral spine can originate from many different low back conditions.

  • Bulging or herniated discs
  • Inflammation
  • Bone spur
  • Lumbar spine stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back)
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Spondylisthesis (condition in which one vertebrae slips forward over another)
  • Pregnancy

Other factors that may increase your back pain include overweight, lack of exercise, wearing high heels, and sleeping on a soft mattress.
