What is CRPS?

What is CRPS? Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic painful condition most common in the extremities. Excessive levels of nerve impulses go to a specific site, causing an abnormally high level of pain. It is believed that CRPS pain occurs when an injury to a nerve or soft tissue does not follow the normal healing process.

What is RSD?

There are two types of CRPS: Type 1 and Type 2. Reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome (RSD) is an older term used to describe CRPS Type 1. RSD occurs after an illness or injury, but the specific damaged nerve cannot be immediately identified. About 90 percent of people with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) have reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD).

CRPS Type 2, also referred to as causalgia, occurs when a distinct major nerve injury has occurred. Injuries triggering CRPS Type 2 include surgery, fractures, amputations, heart attacks, sprains, and other forceful traumas.

The primary goal of CRPS treatment, or RSD treatment, is to relieve the pain.

Anatomy

CRPS can occur throughout the body. It is believed to be a result of dysfunction in the central or peripheral nervous system.

Causes of CRPS/RSD

CRPS is more likely the result of multiple causes that result in similar symptoms than the result of a single cause. In cases of injury-related CRPS, it is believed that something disrupts the normal healing process of the body.
