Cervical (Neck) Pain

Relief from Neck Pain

Does the stiffness in your neck limit your ability to turn your head and, as a result, affect your driving? Does neck pain interfere with your daily activities? Have pain medications and surgery failed you?

There is hope! There is relief! There is CuraLase!

The cervical spine is the bone structure of the neck. When the discs cushioning the bones of the cervical spine are damaged by injury, normal wear and tear, or disease, the bones pinch the nerves, causing pain. Neck pain interferes with the activities of daily living, such as working, playing, housework, and driving.

Anatomy

The cervical spine consists of the first seven vertebrae of the spine, extending from the base of theskull to the thoracic region. Unlike the limited mobility of the thoracic and lumbar regions, the cervicalspine provides a great degree of mobility, allowing the skull to rotate side to side and bend forwardand backward. A network of ligaments, tendons, and muscles support and stabilize the cervical spine.

In addition to supporting the skull, the cervical spine contains and protects the spinal cord. Nerve impulses travel to and from the brain through the spinal cord. The eight pairs of cervical nerves that branch off the spinal cord control the head, neck, and upper body and extremities.

C1: Head and neck
C2: Head and neck
C3: Diaphragm
C4: Upper body muscles (e.g. deltoids, biceps)

C5: Wrist extensors
C6: Wrist extensors
C7: Triceps
C8: Hands

Causes of Neck Pain

Neck pain can be caused by a pinched nerve resulting from a bulging disc, herniated or ruptured disc, cervical spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis of the neck, or cervical degenerative disc disease. Neck pain may also be caused by cervical spondylosis, a spur on the bone irritating a nerve, or by inflammation of the joints between any two vertebrae.

Injuries to the cervical spine area such as muscle strain can also result in acute neck pain. Whiplash, the rapid forward and backward head movement often occurring in automobile accidents, can lead to traumatic injury to the cervical spine.
