Anatomy

The wrist has eight small bones called carpals. The carpals make up three sides of the tunnel; the fourth side consists of the transverse ligament. The median nerve along with vessels and tendons runs through this small tunnel. With carpal tunnel syndrome, irritation occurs which pinches the median nerve and causes it to malfunction.

Causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when there is pressure in the carpal tunnel that compresses the median nerve. The compression causes the nerve to function improperly, causing pain, weakness, and numbness. Carpal tunnel is known as a repetitive motion injury and has been reported as the number one injury according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Tedious work with the hands—such as typing, writing, painting, and using tools—can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome.
